An Integrated Network

One of the transportation hubs of the Pacific Northwest, Portland supports a broad range of industry needs. The Portland region integrates highway, rail, air and river facilities to offer access to domestic and international markets.

Aviation
Portland International Airport (PDX) is the region’s largest airport serving over 12 million air travelers. PDX offers nonstop passenger service to over 50 domestic destinations and 5 international cities. The Portland region is well served by 7 air cargo carriers. Air freight includes nonstop service to Asia via Air China Cargo.

Marine
The Port of Portland offers comprehensive maritime services through 4 terminal operations. The Port of Portland operates the Rivergate Industrial District, with 2 terminals totaling 2,800 acres of land with easy access to Interstate 5. The Rivergate Industrial District is served by BNSF and Union Pacific railroads. Swan Island Industrial Park is 430 acres of industrial land served by the Union Pacific railroad and marine services.

Rail
Portland is the western terminus for the east-west rail corridor that runs at river grade along the Columbia River. Portland is served by BNSF and Union Pacific railroads.

Highways and Trucking
Two major interstate highways, Interstate 5 and Interstate 84, intersect in Portland. Interstate 5 is the main north-south route from Canada to Mexico, connecting Seattle, Portland, Sacramento, Los Angeles and San Diego. Interstate 84 is the principal route to Salt Lake City, the Midwest and East Coast.

Bus, Light Rail and Streetcar
The Portland region is linked by an extensive public transportation system consisting of bus, light rail, streetcar and an aerial tram. TriMet, Portland’s regional transit agency, serves more people than any other transit system of its size in the country. The Portland Streetcar system is one of the more important transportation decisions that has enhanced Portland’s vitality while helping the city accommodate new residential and business growth. The Portland Aerial Tram opened in 2006 and provides connection between Marquam Hill and the revitalizing South Waterfront District.
