Portland city commissioners on Wednesday voted 3-1 to create a $169 million urban renewal area around Portland State University.

With the explosion of video on the Internet, and a similar explosion in the number of video capable devices in the world, content providers and Internet service providers have a problem: how to serve video to all those different formats. Is Old Town Chinatown at the tipping point?

It could be years before the question is answered with any degree of certainty. Still, investments in Old Town are adding up, hinting at a future that doesn’t rely solely on social service agencies that dot the district or its reputation for drug-related crime.

While we love meeting startups one-on-one, we never pass up a chance to meet startups, en masse. And OEN Angel Oregon 2012 seemed to be the perfect opportunity to do just that.

This week, foodie website The Daily Meal put out a list of the 30 Most Powerful People in Drink -- a sort of “who's who” list for the beverage industry. One name on the list caught my eye: Duane Sorenson, the founder of coffeehouse chain Stumptown Coffee Roasters in Portland, Ore. With only nine stores, I was surprised to see him listed among the expected big names, such as Starbucks' Howard Schultz and beverage executives at Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and Anheuser-Busch.

Today, Mayor Sam Adams and Portland Revenue Director Thomas Lannom announced a new tax amnesty program aimed at the business community. As part of the program, the Portland City Council will consider an ordinance on May 9, 2012, to ensure that businesses who apply under a new business tax amnesty program will remain confidential. The amnesty program was designed by the City of Portland Revenue Bureau to encourage businesses that owe back taxes to the City of Portland and Multnomah County to pay what they owe and come into compliance with the law.

The Portland metro unemployment rate fell to 7.9 percent in March. Down from 8.1 percent in February and 9.4 percent from a year ago.
